General genealogical research

Whether you are searching for a specific ancestor, looking for information on an entire family, or just want help starting your genealogy journey, I can help.

I can focus on one person or compile a general family history, including a broad search for your Irish ancestors using Ancestry, FindMyPast, FamilySearch, newspaper archives, and a wide variety of primary sources not available on the big genealogy sites. I’m also happy to discuss your specific needs and recommend an appropriate solution.

Brick wall research

Irish family history is notoriously tricky due to a lack of key records, and this can make finding a particular ancestor difficult, or impossible in some cases. It’s not unusual to hit a brick wall in your research at some point.

Unfortunately, in some cases, the lack of records means your ancestor cannot be traced. However, in many instances, it just takes a fresh perspective and a lateral approach to solve your genealogical mystery.

I know all the methods of finding someone, from how to search most effectively to locating people in obscure records. If your ancestor was born after the Famine (and in many cases earlier in the 19th century), they will usually have left a record somewhere. It’s my job to find out where.

Military research

I can provide a report on an ancestor who fought during Ireland’s War of Independence and/or Civil War, World War I, or who served with the British armed forces prior to WWI.

Ancestor biography

Discover the life story of your Irish ancestor with an ancestor biography – a detailed story of their life, as told by the records they left behind.

An ancestor biography can focus on one person or family. This is an ideal option if you want to find out about an ancestor who was particularly well known.

I can also compile a biography for someone who was less well known, for example you may want to know the story of your ancestor’s life in Ireland before they emigrated, and the family they left behind.

Social history

This is a report focusing on a specific area/county in Ireland – find out more about where your ancestors lived and the significant events they experienced.

Help with citizenship/passport applications

If you have an Irish-born grandparent and wish to apply for an Irish passport on this basis, I can help with finding and ordering the relevant birth, marriage and death certificates required. I can also provide detailed research on your grandparent, if you want to find out more about your link to Ireland.

Family tree

I can build your family tree and provide it as a GEDCOM file, which can be uploaded to a platform of your choice.

Record retrieval

If you are searching for a specific record, let me know and I will find it for you.

And more…

If you have a query that doesn’t fit into any of the above categories, get in touch with me and I will be happy to discuss your specific needs.
